The teachers in Kindergarten Sunflower have been observing parents being distracted by their smartphones when picking up their children in the afternoon. They think it is important for parents and children to connect without distraction after a day in kindergarten. So they decide to hang a sign "Smartphones forbidden" in the hallway. Afterwards the situation improves.

  1. What do you think about the kindergarten's solution for the problem?
  2. What positive outcome do you expect from this measure?
  3. Which attitude on digital media is conveyed with this action?
  4. How could parents perceive the new sign?
  5. Which message does the sign send to parents?
  6. How could the communication between teachers and parents on digital media be influenced by this?
  7. What could the kindergarten do in addition to hanging a sign?

Context

Rules are important and a significant element in media education. Creating shared rules can be a fruitful process and learning opportunity for parents and children. In this case example the kindergarten could take some time during parent teacher meetings to explain why they decided to put the sign up and how that improves the situation. They could provide information on child development and bonding and how technology can disturb these moments of bonding. In this way the team can communicate their attitude, open a conversation to reflect on these questions and also offer support if parents need it.
