What Would You Do?

Offer parents real-life media scenarios and let parents discuss the scenarios in small groups

Goal

Open up discussion with parents about typical struggles around media use in families. Spark interaction and exchange between parents and let them reflect on their resources.

Steps

Prepare one or several case examples that are typical for conflicts around media use in families. You can also ask the parents to provide a typical situation at home around media that they find difficult to navigate.

  • Child sees something scary on YouTube.
  • Child doesn't want to put phone down during dinner.
  • Thomas is allowed to watch one episode every afternoon before bedtime, afterwards he screams and throws a tantrum, because he wants to continue.

Let the parents form groups or sort them into groups (for example with differently coloured sweets/cards).

Give them 20–30 min. time to discuss their situation and collect ideas how to handle the situation (leading questions could be: What is happening in this scenario? What is important for the parents in this situation? What is important for the child? What could be helpful for the parents in this situation? What would you do?)

Join in the whole group and exchange the ideas and key aspects of the different groups discussions.

Mention some helpful resources that could also support parents in their media education.
