Ask the Expert: Children and Media

An outside expert joins a moderated conversation with parents about media use in early childhood

Goal

To give parents access to expert knowledge about children's media habits and development, and to support open, respectful discussion.

Steps

Invite a relevant expert — e.g. a child psychologist, media literacy trainer, digital wellbeing advisor, or pediatrician with experience in early childhood and media.

Work with the expert in advance to shape the focus of the session (e.g. screen time, media and emotions, digital habits at home).

Prepare a few opening questions to guide the conversation (e.g. "What do we know about screen time and child development?" "How can parents respond when they feel overwhelmed by media conflicts?")

Begin the session by introducing the expert and framing the event as a conversation, not a lecture.

Encourage parents to write questions on cards or ask them directly. A kindergarten teacher can moderate to keep the tone supportive and inclusive.

If time allows, break into small groups after the main talk for parents to share reflections, and then return for a final wrap-up with the expert.

Provide a short handout or follow-up resource list from the expert, including useful websites, books, or tips.
